If Plex keeps buffering on Apple TV in Bunny Ears TV, do not start by reinstalling the app or rebuilding the library. Start with the current stream. Find out whether Plex is sending the original file, repackaging it, or transcoding it, then check whether the Apple TV is reaching the server locally, remotely, or through Plex Relay.
Those two facts usually narrow the problem quickly. A fast internet plan cannot rescue an overloaded transcoder, a poor Wi-Fi hop, or a Relay connection. A powerful server cannot make a high-bitrate Direct Play stream fit through a weak route.
I built Bunny Ears TV for the moment when you want to turn on Apple TV and see what is already playing, not spend the evening debugging it. Its NewPlayer playback engine supports Plex Direct Play, Direct Stream, and transcoded delivery. Which path Plex chooses depends on the file, selected tracks, quality setting, server, and network route. No honest player can promise that every file will always Direct Play.
Diagnose Plex Buffering Before Changing Settings
While the affected program is playing, open the Plex Dashboard from another device. Look for three things:
- Does Plex identify the connection as local, remote, or indirect?
- Does video show Direct Play, Direct Stream, or Transcode?
- Does audio show Direct Play or Transcode?
Then note what you actually see on Apple TV.

Make one change at a time and replay the same item. If you change the network, subtitle track, video quality, and playback reliability together, a good result will not tell you what fixed it.
1. Check the Active Bunny Ears TV Connection Profile
On Apple TV, open Settings > Streaming Quality in Bunny Ears TV. The app keeps separate video-quality choices for Wi-Fi and Ethernet, so confirm that you are changing the profile for the connection Apple TV is actually using.
This matters after moving from wireless to a cable or back again. A fixed 8 Mbps Wi-Fi limit does not automatically become an Ethernet preference. The profiles are device-local, which also means a cellular limit chosen on iPhone does not quietly lower the living-room picture.
Start with Video Quality: Auto. On verified healthy local Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Auto preserves Direct Play when the media and Apple TV are compatible. Remote, constrained, demonstrably slow, or relayed routes can use a bounded Plex transcode instead. Bunny Ears TV takes a small background sample through the selected Plex connection to inform a later channel change. It does not tear down a working stream simply to run that check.

2. Use Original Quality as a Test, Not a Cure-All
If a compatible file on a healthy local network is transcoding because of an accidental quality ceiling, Original Quality is a useful comparison. It prevents Bunny Ears TV from requesting a video transcode.
That is a hard preference, not a compatibility spell. Plex may still Direct Stream compatible tracks into another container, and an item that NewPlayer cannot play in the requested form may fail instead of being converted. Original Quality can also buffer when the source bitrate is larger than the network can sustain.
If Auto buffers but Original Quality plays cleanly on the same local route, inspect what Plex was transcoding and why. If Original Quality buffers more, the untouched source may simply be too demanding for that connection.
3. Match Playback Reliability to the Network
Video Quality controls what Bunny Ears TV asks Plex to deliver. Playback Reliability controls how patiently the player starts, buffers, and reconnects.
- Auto tunes quickly on a healthy local route and gives mobile, remote, or unstable routes more patience.
- Fast Start uses a smaller starting buffer for a reliable local network.
- Balanced adds buffer and retry time without the longest startup wait.
- Maximum Stability uses the deepest buffer and most patient reconnect behavior for difficult connections.
Fast Start is appealing for channel surfing because the next program begins sooner. It is the wrong choice if playback starts immediately and then stops every few minutes. Move to Balanced or Maximum Stability and test the same program again.
Do not confuse a larger buffer with more bandwidth. It can absorb short fluctuations, but it cannot make a connection carry a sustained stream that is larger than the available throughput.
4. Separate a Network Problem From a Transcoding Problem
A Plex transcode can buffer even when the Apple TV connection is excellent. The server has to decode the source, convert the necessary tracks, and deliver the result faster than playback consumes it.
In Plex Dashboard, watch the server activity while the pause occurs. If a video transcode cannot maintain speed, inspect the server before blaming Apple TV Wi-Fi. Bunny Ears TV's current Direct Stream fallback copies both the selected video and audio without re-encoding them. Its separate bounded HLS route converts the video to H.264 and audio to AAC. Read the Plex Dashboard video and audio lines separately, but do not mistake a remux for a hidden audio conversion.

5. Test the Subtitle Lane Once
NewPlayer keeps subtitle handling separate from video delivery. Bunny Ears TV asks Plex's video transcoder not to burn subtitles into the picture, then routes embedded or sidecar tracks through the client-side subtitle lane. Text, bitmap, and heavily styled tracks still have different parsing, composition, font, and scaling requirements.
Turn subtitles off and replay the same scene. If the video becomes steady without changing its Plex delivery mode, try another track or add a compatible text sidecar to the Plex item. That points to subtitle parsing or presentation, not a need to weaken the whole streaming profile. If Plex Dashboard unexpectedly changes between Direct Play, Direct Stream, and Transcode solely because you selected a subtitle, record both states for a useful support report.

6. Test the Audio Track Separately
A movie with several audio tracks may behave differently depending on which one is selected. The track is part of the exact source combination NewPlayer evaluates, and it is also the track Plex uses if Bunny Ears TV requests bounded HLS. Test an alternate track if one is available, then compare the Dashboard result.
This is especially useful when Plex Dashboard reports Direct Play but the session still struggles. In Bunny Ears TV, Settings > Playback > Audio & Subtitles also lets you choose Best Available or Stereo for surround sound. Use the setting that matches the actual television, receiver, or soundbar path.
7. Verify Local Really Means Local
The server and Apple TV can be in the same house while Plex still reaches the server through a remote path. VPNs, segmented networks, guest Wi-Fi, multiple subnets, and router configuration can all change what Plex sees.
If Plex Dashboard says remote or indirect when you expect local:
- Confirm that Apple TV is not on guest Wi-Fi.
- Temporarily remove a VPN or proxy from the test.
- Check that the server and Apple TV can communicate across their network segments.
- Use Bunny Ears TV's Try Local Connection recovery action when it is offered.
- Confirm Plex Remote Access separately rather than assuming the player caused the route.
A local route does not guarantee format compatibility. It only removes one major bandwidth variable.
8. Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi Without Guessing
Ethernet is a useful test when the Apple TV model and room support it. If the same high-bitrate item stops buffering over Ethernet, the wireless path deserves attention. If it still pauses at the same point, look harder at the media or server.
Strong Wi-Fi can play large files well, but the speed shown by an internet test is not the complete path from Plex Media Server to Apple TV. Signal quality, interference, access-point placement, mesh backhaul, and local congestion still count.
Do not buy new networking equipment because one damaged or unusual file fails. Compare a normal episode, a high-bitrate movie, and the troublesome title first.
9. Allow for Bitrate Peaks
A file's average bitrate does not describe its hardest few seconds. A 40 Mbps movie can briefly require much more. That is why Plex buffering can occur even when a speed test appears comfortably above the average printed in Media Info.
If several high-bitrate files pause during visually complex scenes, test a lower bounded quality in Bunny Ears TV. The available video choices range from 1 Mbps up to 40 Mbps, plus Auto and Original Quality. A fixed ceiling intentionally asks Plex to prepare a smaller stream, so the server must be able to transcode it in real time.
For remote playback, also account for the server location's upload speed. The download speed beside the Apple TV is only half of that trip.
10. Know When Plex Relay Is the Route
An indirect connection may be going through Plex Relay. Plex currently documents a 2 Mbps maximum for Relay streams. Bunny Ears TV's Auto policy uses a more conservative 1 Mbps ceiling when it knows the route is Relay. That 1 Mbps choice belongs to Bunny Ears TV; it is not the Plex Relay limit.
Relay can keep media reachable when a direct connection is unavailable, but it is not the route to use for an original-quality 4K file. If the Dashboard reports indirect playback, fix direct Remote Access when possible or accept a deliberately reduced stream for that connection.

11. Use Channel 19 as a Real Mixed-Library Test
A Plex music video library is an excellent stress test because it often mixes old 4:3 clips, DVD-era files, modern H.264, HEVC releases, stereo audio, surround concert footage, and several frame rates. One successful video says very little about the next one.
Music Video Mixtapes on channel 19 can use Plex playlists, collections, and video libraries. Let it play through ten transitions and record which items buffer. If every clip struggles, inspect the route and quality profile. If only two old encodes fail, inspect those files instead of weakening the whole station.

12. Do Not Mistake an HDMI Switch for Buffering
A brief black screen at the beginning of a program may be Apple TV matching the source's dynamic range or frame rate. That is an HDMI format change, not necessarily a stalled stream. Actual buffering usually shows the player waiting for media and can happen after playback has already begun.
Bunny Ears TV offers High Dynamic Range and Refresh Rate choices under Settings > Playback > Video & Display. Match Content favors the source format. When the Problem Belongs to One File
If one program fails while similar items play, collect the title, Plex media information, and playback XML before changing global settings. Video codec, profile, bit depth, audio, container, subtitle track, and file integrity can each matter.

A Good Apple TV Starting Point
For a healthy home network, begin with Video Quality: Auto and Playback Reliability: Auto. Try Fast Start only after playback is already stable. Use Original Quality as a deliberate local test, not a blanket promise. Check the Plex Dashboard before deciding that a transcode, Relay route, or subtitle is harmless.
Bunny Ears TV runs on Apple TV 4K, first generation or newer, with tvOS 26. It does not support Apple TV HD. The app connects to the Plex server you already maintain, without Docker, an IPTV playlist, or another channel server. Your media remains on that Plex server, and Bunny Ears TV does not insert third-party ads.
When the route and delivery mode match the room, the reward is pleasantly ordinary: something is already on, and it keeps playing.
