“Plex not working on Apple TV” can mean at least six different things. The link code never finishes. The server is missing. Bunny Ears TV returns to server selection. The program guide is empty. One channel will not tune. Or channel 19 appears but has no music videos.
Those problems do not share one reset button.
This guide is specifically for using a Plex Media Server through Bunny Ears TV on Apple TV. It is not a list of button locations in Plex's own Apple TV app. I built Bunny Ears TV to turn one selected Plex server into a television-style guide: channel surf your own library, instead of opening another poster grid and trying to choose.
Start by identifying the last stage that works. That will usually tell you which system owns the failure.
The 60-Second Apple TV Plex Check
| What you see | What is probably working | Check next |
|---|---|---|
| No Plex link code or the code expires | Apple TV app launch only | Internet access, Plex account service, then request a fresh code |
| Plex account links, but no server appears | Account authorization | Server process, server sign-in, ownership or sharing |
| The correct server appears, but libraries do not | Server discovery | Library permissions and selected Plex Home profile |
| Bunny Ears TV returns to server discovery at launch | Saved server identity | Current Local, Remote, or Relay reachability |
| Guide loads, but one program fails | Account, server, and cached guide | File availability, route, quality, subtitles, and NewPlayer delivery |
| Guide loads, but many channels are absent | Core sync | Selected libraries, package choices, metadata, and Hide Empty Channels |
| Channel 19 has no videos | General guide | Music Video Mixtapes sources and Plex access to those sources |
Do not reinstall yet. A fresh install cannot start a stopped Plex Media Server, grant a shared-library permission, repair a moved file, or change a router path.
1. Check Whether Plex Is Down or Your Server Is Down
Plex is partly a cloud account service and partly a server you operate or access. Check Plex's service status if account linking, server discovery, or several unrelated Plex apps fail at once. Then check the personal server:
- Is Plex Media Server running?
- Is the computer awake?
- Is the server signed in to the expected Plex account?
- Can Plex Web App open one representative item from the same account?
Plex's own server connection checklist recommends a current server version, an active server process, and account sign-in on both the server and player.
If Plex Web App cannot see the server either, the problem is earlier than Bunny Ears TV. If Plex Web works but Bunny Ears TV does not, continue with the selected account, server, and route.
2. Verify the Apple TV and Plex Account
Bunny Ears TV supports Apple TV 4K, first generation or newer, running tvOS 26. Apple TV HD is not supported. The same app also runs on iPhone with iOS 26 and iPad with iPadOS 26.
On first setup, Bunny Ears TV presents a four-character Plex code. Open plex.tv/link on another device while signed in to the account you actually want on the television, then enter the code. Plex explains the account-linking flow in Connect a Player App to Your Plex Account.
The Bunny Ears TV setup guide follows the complete path from account linking through the first program-guide build.
The account determines which owned and shared servers Bunny Ears TV can discover. Authorizing the wrong household member can produce the wrong server list even though sign-in succeeded.
For a server owned by a friend or relative, the owner must grant library access through Plex. Bunny Ears TV does not grant that access.
Plex Home profiles add another layer. A restricted profile can see a different lineup from an adult profile. Check the active profile before treating a missing library, music station, or channel as a network failure.
3. Confirm the One Selected Plex Server and Its Libraries
Bunny Ears TV builds each guide from one selected Plex server at a time. It does not merge movies from one server with music videos from another.
Open Settings > Server & Library and confirm the server name. The page also shows movie, episode, track, and active-channel counts. If the wrong server is selected, use Switch Server. If the right server is selected but content is missing, use Manage Libraries.
The library picker controls what Bunny Ears TV imports. A Plex account may see ten libraries while its guide uses only three. That keeps an archive or adult library out of the living-room guide merely because it exists.
After changing the selection or correcting Plex metadata, use Refresh Library & Guide and let the visible refresh finish.
The original media remains on the selected server. A refresh does not upload the library to me or copy it into another channel server.
4. Read Local, Remote, and Relay on Apple TV
Under Settings > Server & Library, the Connection row combines a server route with the current Apple TV interface.
- Local · Ethernet or Local · Wi-Fi means Bunny Ears TV reaches the selected server directly on the local network.
- Remote · Wi-Fi means the Apple TV uses Wi-Fi, but its server route is remote.
- Relay · Wi-Fi means Plex could not make a direct connection and is tunneling the stream.
- Offline means tvOS currently reports no usable network path.
Guest-network isolation, separate VLANs, VPNs, or DNS rebinding protection can make an Apple TV show Remote even at home.
When a saved route is Remote and Apple TV is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Bunny Ears TV offers Try Local Connection. It asks Plex for current connection details, verifies a local address before switching, and reports a specific failure when it cannot.
Plex's secure-connection documentation explains how DNS rebinding protection can block local plex.direct connections. Prefer a router-specific fix over turning security features off indiscriminately.
If the server is genuinely somewhere else, the correct label is Remote. Plex Remote Access must be enabled on the server. A Relay label means direct Remote Access failed, not that the Apple TV has stopped using Wi-Fi.
For port 32400, double NAT, CGNAT, Plex Relay, and current remote-video account requirements, use the Plex Remote Access route checks for Bunny Ears TV. This article stays with the broader question of which Apple TV layer failed.
5. Separate an Empty Guide From a Broken Guide
Bunny Ears TV includes 427 built-in channels across 17 packages, including 68 Radio stations. Not all 427 rows will appear for every Plex library. The current channel guide shows the available definitions and their intended sources.
A channel needs matching content. A narrow horror subgenre cannot appear if the selected libraries contain nothing that meets its rules. Hide Empty Channels can also remove unpopulated rows from the guide.
The 26-channel Basic package is always free. Other packages and premium features require Bunny Ears TV+. A missing package can therefore be an entitlement or selection question rather than a Plex failure.
Use this sequence:
- Confirm the intended libraries under Server & Library.
- Confirm Basic or the desired package under Settings > Channel Packages.
- Temporarily review Hide Empty Channels under Guide settings.
- Check the title, genre, year, rating, collection, and other metadata in Plex.
- Run Refresh Library & Guide after correcting the source.
If a broad movie channel has programs but a narrow channel does not, the server connection is probably fine. Check the narrower matching pool.
6. If the Guide Works but a Program Will Not Play
A loaded guide proves that Bunny Ears TV has schedule data. It does not prove that the exact file remains available on the current route.
Bunny Ears TV's NewPlayer opens the scheduled Plex item through the selected route. Under Settings > Streaming Quality, Auto protects compatible Direct Play on a healthy local route and can request a bounded Plex transcode on a limited route.
If one item fails while others play:
- Confirm the file still exists at the path Plex expects.
- Play that exact item through Plex Web App.
- Test once without subtitles, especially image-based subtitles.
- Try another audio track if the file has several.
- Check whether the source was replaced after the guide was built.
- Note whether Plex reports Direct Play, Direct Stream, or Transcode.
If every high-bitrate item fails, inspect the route and streaming quality. If every item fails, return to server reachability and authorization. Do not redesign the network around one unusual encode.
Original Quality is not a repair switch. On a weak Remote or Relay route, it can ask the network to carry more data than it can sustain. Auto is the better diagnostic baseline. For file-specific color, stutter, audio, or caption failures, use the Plex playback problems guide.
If playback begins and then repeatedly pauses, follow the Plex buffering checks for Apple TV. If Plex Dashboard shows an unexpected delivery mode, use the Direct Play, Direct Stream, and transcoding guide. If the result changes only when captions are on, start with the Bunny Ears TV subtitle settings and formats.
7. If Plex Remote Video Fails on Apple TV
Remote reachability and remote playback permission are different gates.
If the same item works at home but not somewhere else, record whether Bunny Ears TV shows Remote, Relay, or Offline. Then use the complete Plex Remote Access troubleshooting guide for Bunny Ears TV. It covers port 32400, UPnP and NAT-PMP, double NAT, CGNAT, Relay limits, the separate 1 Mbps safety ceiling Bunny Ears TV uses for Relay on Auto, and how to interpret Plex's platform-specific remote-video account requirements.
Plex's current affected-app list does not name Apple TV, tvOS, or Bunny Ears TV, so do not diagnose a missing Plex pass unless Plex reports an entitlement error. Where Plex does enforce one of its requirements, a Bunny Ears TV+ purchase cannot satisfy it. Bunny Ears TV+ unlocks features in my app. Once the account and direct route work, return here if the remaining problem is a missing guide, one scheduled item, or Channel 19.
8. If Channel 19 Has No Plex Music Videos
Channel 19, Music Video Mixtapes, is included in the always-free Basic package. It can turn visible Plex video libraries, collections, and playlists into a continuous music video channel on Apple TV.
It is not populated from the audio Music library, and Bunny Ears TV does not download videos. Configure it under Settings > Music Video Mixtapes > Video Sources.
If a source is missing:
- Confirm it belongs to the one selected server.
- Confirm the linked Plex account can see and play it.
- Remember that Plex playlists can be account-specific.
- Use a shared video library or server collection when another account cannot see the owner's playlist.
- Refresh after Plex finishes scanning newly added files.
The 68 Radio stations use selected Plex Music libraries instead. Channel 19 plays video. Radio plays audio. Their sources are not interchangeable.
Once channel 19 has a source, the guide has something already playing instead of another artist, folder, or clip browser. The Plex music video channel setup guide covers source selection, artist spacing, and Song IDs.
9. Reinstall Only After the Narrow Checks
Reinstalling Bunny Ears TV is reasonable only after the account, server, libraries, route, and representative media have been checked. Before doing it, record:
- Apple TV model and tvOS version
- Bunny Ears TV version
- Selected server name
- Connection label, including Local, Remote, or Relay
- Whether the interface is Ethernet or Wi-Fi
- Channel number and program title
- Video Quality and Playback Reliability choices
- Whether the same item works through Plex Web App
- Whether the failure affects every item or one file
Those details turn “Plex is broken” into a report I can investigate and can expose a moved file or lost shared-library access.
Common Apple TV Questions
Does Bunny Ears TV replace the Plex app on Apple TV?
It offers a different way to use the same server. Plex's app centers browsing and on-demand playback. Bunny Ears TV builds a scheduled program guide, Channel Surfer, built-in channels, Radio, Music Video Mixtapes, and custom channels from media already available through Plex.
Does Bunny Ears TV need Docker, IPTV, or another server?
No. It is a native Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad app. There is no Docker container, M3U playlist, XMLTV feed, Plex plug-in, or separate Bunny Ears TV server to maintain.
Does Bunny Ears TV upload my Plex library?
No. Your movies, shows, music, and music videos stay on the Plex server you selected. Bunny Ears TV uses Plex-provided metadata, artwork, and streams to build and play the guide. It does not insert third-party ads.
Why does the guide still appear when the server is offline?
Bunny Ears TV can retain a cached guide so a temporary failure does not erase the schedule. Playback still needs a working route to the media. Check Server & Library before assuming the visible guide proves the server is online.
